The client is a medical technology company specializing in synthetic surgical hemostats and sealants. They are a part of an American global medical devices and pharmaceutical group.

Role Description
We are seeking a Facilities Engineer to support the reliable operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of a modern manufacturing facility in Leiden. In this position, you will be responsible for ensuring that building systems, utilities, equipment, and facility services operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with GMP, GxP, quality, and EHS requirements.
Acting as a key operational engineering resource, you will oversee maintenance activities, manage facility-related projects, support equipment reliability initiatives, and contribute to a culture of operational excellence. The role requires a hands-on approach, strong technical expertise, and the ability to balance compliance, performance, cost, and sustainability objectives within a highly regulated environment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the safe and compliant operation of facility systems, utilities, and manufacturing support equipment.
  • Monitoring site safety and environmental performance and contributing to the development and execution of improvement plans.
  • Leading and supporting equipment reliability and operational excellence programs across the facility.
  • Implementing and overseeing preventive maintenance programs for building utilities, manufacturing systems, mechanical and electromechanical equipment.
  • Providing technical support for complex facility and laboratory-related systems.
  • Managing facility improvement, maintenance, and capital projects from planning through execution.
  • Developing and reviewing cost estimates covering equipment, installation, labor, materials, and associated project expenses.
  • Supervising construction, installation, and commissioning activities while ensuring compliance with applicable standards, regulations, and company requirements.
  • Providing technical guidance and mentorship to engineering and maintenance personnel.
  • Identifying and implementing energy-saving initiatives, including feasibility assessments, financial justification, and project delivery.
  • Ensuring facilities and utility systems remain compliant with GMP, GxP, EHS, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Supporting change management activities and ensuring modifications meet local, corporate, and regulatory standards.
  • Proactively identifying operational, compliance, safety, quality, and financial risks and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Driving continuous improvement initiatives through CAPA programs and quality management systems.
  • Monitoring performance metrics, inventory levels, and maintenance-related costs to improve operational efficiency.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related technical discipline.
  • Approximately 5-7 years of experience in facilities engineering, maintenance, utilities, or operations within a regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of EHS, quality systems, facility operations, and maintenance management.
  • Experience working in GMP/GxP-regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, or life sciences.
  • Proven troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities across facility services and utility systems, including GMP and non-GMP utilities.
  • Experience managing contractors, maintenance providers, and external vendors.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects, budgets, cost estimates, and performance metrics.
  • Strong communication skills with professional fluency in English, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and adapt to changing business priorities.
  • Master's degree (MSc) or MBA is advantageous.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification is considered a plus.
  • Service-oriented mindset with a flexible and proactive approach to supporting site operations.
