Purpose of the role

We are looking for a highly motivated and inquisitive Senior Technician Adult Neurology to support the development of (novel) of gene therapies for disorders of the central nervous system (CNS).


Place in the Organization

The position is based in the Research Department (Amsterdam), within the Adult Neurology group.

The key activities of the group are to develop novel gene therapy strategies for the treatment of CNS disorders of high unmet medical need. To this end, a deep understanding of underlying mechanisms of CNS disease is needed, to be applied to the strategy and design of innovative therapeutic approaches. The senior technician is, together with the broader team, responsible of bringing technical excellence to the team, to support early research programs. She/he is responsible of developing novel methods, tailored to the known mechanism-of-action of each given gene therapy approach, aimed at showing therapeutic efficacy, in vitro and in preclinical studies.


Key result areas (major duties, accountabilities and responsibilities)

  • Involved in practical lab work and data analysis
  • Develops novel molecular, biochemical or in vitro assays to support preclinical work on novel CNS targets
  • Executes the experimental work as planned with the Senior Scientist, with little to no supervision
  • Plans her/his own work, sets priorities and timelines and adheres to these timelines
  • Participates in the planning of experiments and trouble-shooting discussions in multidisciplinary preclinical teams
  • Recognizes day-to-day problems and proposes solutions based on standard procedures
  • Supports other lab members and participates in general lab tasks and activities
  • Is quality orientated (i.e. detail and data critical) and she/he evaluates his/her own behavior and corrects her/himself if needed. She/he proposes ways to improve quality and throughput
  • Maintains proper documentation, including report writing for internal purposes


Qualifications & Skills

  • Successfully completed HLO/HBO/Bachelor education (or higher professional education) in life sciences, biology, biotechnology or similar
  • At least 5 years of demonstrated experience in a similar position (academic or industry laboratory experience)
  • Demonstrated experience with in vitro cell models (cell lines, primary cultures); experience in iPSC, is highly advantageous
  • In-depth knowledge of molecular (cloning, DNA and RNA isolation, QPCR, sequencing approaches) and biochemical (western blot, ELISA, MSD) techniques is a must
  • Background in the field of neurodegenerative disorders is plus
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language (verbal, written and scientific)
