The Role 
This role involves designing, implementing, and supporting Building Management Systems (BMS) and Environmental Monitoring Systems (EMS) in a GxP-regulated biotech manufacturing environment. As part of the Execution Systems team, the Automation Engineer ensures these critical systems operate reliably, compliantly, and efficiently, contributing to safe, high-quality biologics production. The position includes technical execution, system validation, vendor coordination, and potential project leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and support Building Management Systems (BMS) and Environmental Monitoring Systems (EMS) in compliance with GxP standards

  • Provide technical maintenance and troubleshooting to ensure system reliability and regulatory compliance

  • Coordinate and manage external vendors, subcontractors, and system integrators

  • Lead and execute automation changes in collaboration with a multidisciplinary engineering team

  • Develop and review functional requirement specifications, test plans, and validation documentation

  • Support system commissioning, qualification, and validation activities

  • Maintain and update life cycle documentation, including system architecture and technical records

  • Create and revise standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions related to automation systems

  • Ensure safe, compliant, and efficient operation of automation systems in a regulated manufacturing environment

  • Contribute to cross-functional projects and continuous improvement initiatives within the Execution Systems team

Requirements 
  • Technical degree (minimum HBO) with 2–5 years in biotech/pharma and 3–5 years working with recent BMS systems
  • Solid understanding of GAMP and cGMP, with experience in system validation and life cycle documentation
  • Skilled in Honeywell PLC HC900, EBI R600 (preferred), Priva, integration protocols, P&IDs, and industrial control systems
  • VCA and NEN 3140 certified; fluent in Dutch and English (spoken and written)
  • Proactive, detail-oriented team player with strong communication, organizational, and independent working skills
